again
People say "again" when they want something repeated, redone, or continued. It is a simple request for another round of whatever just happened.
What a model may hear
- retry loop programming and shell scripts
- insert a retry mechanism, loop back to a previous step, or repeat the last command block
- regeneration text and image generation APIs
- produce another sample with the same prompt, often re-randomizing seeds or parameters
- re-training machine learning pipelines
- trigger another training epoch or resume from checkpoint, which costs time and compute
- idempotency flag HTTP and messaging systems
- treat the request as a duplicate and reject it, or conversely force a repeated action despite deduplication
Where people and models part ways
“Do that again”
Meant: repeat the last answer verbatim or in the same style
May be taken as: re-run a hidden tool call, API request, or code execution that may charge money or change data
Say instead: “Repeat your last answer without calling any tools or APIs”
“Try again”
Meant: give another attempt at the same task with a fresh approach
May be taken as: enter an unbounded retry loop or escalate to a more aggressive model setting
Say instead: “Give a new answer to the same question, stopping after one attempt”
“Start over again”
Meant: begin the conversation topic fresh, ignoring what came before
May be taken as: clear context window, session memory, or conversation history, losing earlier work
Say instead: “Pretend we are starting fresh on this topic, but keep our earlier conversation in context”
“Again, I need...”
Meant: emphasizing a repeated need, not a command to repeat
May be taken as: interpret as a system instruction to loop or regenerate, overriding the actual request
Say instead: “As I mentioned before, I need...”
Tips
- Say 'repeat your previous answer' instead of 'again' if you only want the text restated
- Specify 'without running code' when you mean review, not re-execute
- Use 'from the beginning' for narrative restarts; 'again' alone invites technical repetition
- Check if a previous tool call was hidden; 'again' may re-trigger it silently
- Say 'a different version' if you want variation, not literal repetition
Often confused with
- repeat
- more explicit, less likely to trigger loops
- retry
- technical, signals fault recovery to systems
- regenerate
- specific to sampling new AI outputs
- loop
- explicitly programmatic, invites iteration logic
- continue
- extends rather than restarts
- more
- asks for additional, not identical, output
